Correlates of Female Genital Self-Image Among Portuguese Young Women

Abstract Female genital self-image (FGSI) is a significant factor in women’s sexual health, behavior, and satisfaction. This study examined the relationships between FGSI, sexual double standard adherence, female genital anatomy knowledge, and the frequency of masturbation and orgasm in Portuguese women. A sample of 604 women (Mage = 28) completed surveys, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. The study found that the average FGSI score was high (M = 27.9; SD = 5.60; [7–35]). Higher orgasm frequency with a partner (β = 0.32, p < .001) and greater masturbation frequency in the past year (β = 0.18, p < .001) were positively associated with a more favorable FGSI. Conversely, adherence to the sexual double standard (β = – 0.23, p < .001) was linked to a more negative FGSI. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing sociocultural factors influencing FGSI in clinical and educational settings to challenge stigmatizing attitudes about female genitalia. While the study provides valuable insights into FGSI among Portuguese women, its cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reported data limit its generalizability. Overall, the results highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve FGSI, promoting women’s psychological and sexual well-being.
