Exploring the Causal Factors of Drug Abuse in Adults with Substance Use Disorders: A Qualitative Analysis

The prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) among adults has become a significant threat to the community's health, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the causal factors that contribute to drug abuse. The aim of this study was to explore the causal factor of drug abuse in adults with SUDs. Individuals with SUDs from various rehabilitation centers in Islamabad and Rawalpindi participated in this study using a qualitative research design. The sample consisted of 12 individuals within age range of 18-24 years from various rehabilitation centers in Islamabad and Rawalpindi who were experiencing substance use disorder. Purposive sampling was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with adults struggling with SUDs. The study employed thematic analyses to identify themes and sub themes related to the causal factor of drug abuse among adults with SUDs. Thematic analyses revealed multifaceted causal factors contributing to drug abuse among adults with SUDs. The findings revealed five main themes includes individual challenges, social challenges, coping, personal incapacities, and health care related challenges in adults with Substance use disorder SUDs. The study sheds light on the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the initiation and perpetuation of substance abuse. The findings not only contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of drug abuse, but also provide critical insights for building targeted intervention strategies. By addressing the root causes identified in this research, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and rehabilitation centers can enhance their ability to implement effective preventive measures and comprehensive treatment approaches, ultimately fostering more successful rehabilitation outcomes for adults (SUDs).
