How to Defeat Mammon One Transaction at a Time
Structural change could weaken the thrall of Mammon, but arguments from game theory suggest that individual market actions can also be powerful, and would return moral agency to the individual against a force that can otherwise feel overwhelming. Consumerism rests on three very basic but powerful logics: insatiability, novelty and subjectivity. These are driven by human desire. While this desire can play into the power of Mammon, desire itself is God-given, when rightly directed. One way to school our desire is to reform our personal practices of consumption, and redeeming the monthly bank statement is the ideal place to start.
