Light Canvas: An IoT-Based Interactive Virtual Drawing System for Enhancing Educational Engagement

Although the use of technology in education is rapidly increasing, such smart educational tools are not universally available in preschools due to cost constraints, lack of infrastructure and skilled personnel.Consequently, many children are deprived of access to a smart education system. Thus, the objectives of this research are to propose an IoT-based smart educational tool designed to teach preschool children basic drawing and geometric shapes, regardless of their background, and to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. To achieve these objectives, a conceptual framework was first proposed, followed by the design of the system. The proposed system offers real-time drawing by detecting the user's fingertip using an image-processing algorithm and provides feedback by providing measures of drawing accuracy. The Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) scores were consistently above 0.7 for simple shapes like squares and circles, and around 0.6 for more complex shapes like stars, indicating good matches and satisfactory drawings. Finally, the three key features of the proposed system were evaluated to determine its effectiveness and efficiency. The results revealed that the average number of trials to success was 1.8 0.75, 1.8 0.75, and 1.4 0.49, respectively. For efficiency, the average completion times were 8.8 4.61, 17.6 8.17, and 1.2 0.24 seconds, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed
