17-GHz self-starting Kerr-lens mode-locked monolithic titanium–sapphire laser
We have developed an ultra-compact and robust mode-locked titanium–sapphire (Ti:Sa) laser in order to achieve higher repetition rates than previously possible with this medium. The key to our success is a monolithic resonator. It enabled a repetition rate of 17 GHz at 900 mW average power and provides reliable self-starting Kerr-lens mode-locking. The repetition rate is a record for Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:Sa lasers, and we aim to scale it beyond 100 GHz in future versions. Mass production of our simple laser should be cost-effective and therefore enhance applications such as frequency combs and telecommunications.
