Service performance and progressive damage analysis of type IV hydrogen storage vessels

Abstract An analysis of the service performance was conducted on the designed type IV hydrogen storage vessel, which has 35 L of volume and operates under a pressure standard of 70 MPa. The winding layer model was established by using the WCM plug-in of ABAQUS. Strength analysis were performed on cylinder both at working pressure and minimum burst pressure. The ultimate burst pressure of cylinder was obtained by using the progressive damage analysis. The results show that the stress of the cylinder liner under working pressure is 36.96 MPa, which is lower than the yield strength of the liner material. The maximum stress of the winding layer is 1772 MPa, which fulfillings the strength and stiffness criteria of the winding layer. The ultimate burst pressure of the vessel is predicted to be 172 MPa.
