Three-dimensional semi-circular arc with negative Poisson’s ratio: Structural design and mechanical performance study
Abstract Negative Poisson’s ratio structures possess remarkable mechanical properties, including excellent impact resistance and lightweight characteristics. In this paper, we propose a novel three-dimensional semicircular negative Poisson’s ratio structure. Building upon the traditional two-dimensional concave polygon structure, we replace the rectangular cross-section with a circular cross-section and the concave region with a circular arc. By employing orthogonal and array methods, we construct a three-dimensional negative Poisson’s ratio structure that significantly enhances its tensile and compressive performance. The impact of various parameters on the equivalent modulus of elasticity and equivalent Poisson’s ratio of the negative Poisson’s ratio structure is thoroughly examined. Static mechanical simulations are conducted on structures with different cell angles, and negative Poisson’s ratio structures with varying cell angles are fabricated by using SLA printing technology for subsequent tensile testing. Our research outcomes demonstrate that an increased arc angle leads to higher equivalent modulus of elasticity while reducing the equivalent Poisson’s ratio.
