Hydrodynamic performance of floating wind turbine under the combined action of wind and wave

Abstract The objective of this study is to examine the impact of wind and wave interaction on the hydrodynamic characteristics of floating wind turbines. Based on the fluid volume method and overlapping grid technique, the influence of variable wind fields on the hydrodynamic characteristics of series wind turbines (with a spacing of 3 times the diameter of wind turbine blades) was researched. The calculation results demonstrate that the disturbance in the wind field will increase the aerodynamic load, and consequently affect the motion state of the floating wind turbine in the marine environment. When two wind turbines are positioned in series at a distance three times the diameter of the blades, a specific dynamic response is exhibited. More specifically, the pitch and surge responses of downstream wind turbines are more prominent than those of upstream wind turbines. This indicates that turbulence and wake effects of the wind field have a stronger effect on their aerodynamic stability. However, in terms of heave response, the amplitude of the downstream turbine is reduced, potentially due to the energy dissipation and slowing down of the upstream turbine’s wake, thereby minimizing the downstream turbine’s vertical fluctuation.
