Challenges & Coping Strategies of Students in Mathematics Taught Using the Spiral Progression Approach and Its Relationship to their Academic Achievement Basis for Mathematics Program
This study investigates the challenges and coping strategies of junior high school students in mathematics taught using the Spiral Progression Approach (SPA) and its relationship to their academic achievement. The research was conducted in selected schools in Caloocan City, Philippines, to address critical gaps in the effectiveness of the SPA and provide data-driven insights for instructional enhancement. A descriptive- correlational design was employed, involving 292 junior high school students selected via stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, divided into sections on demographic profile, academic achievement, challenges encountered, and coping strategies. Statistical analyses included frequency counts, means, and correlations to determine relationships between variables. Findings revealed that students face significant challenges in mathematics, including difficulty integrating concepts due to the iterative nature of the SPA and limited resources. Coping strategies primarily involved peer collaboration, supplementary materials, and self-regulated learning techniques. Significant differences in academic achievement and challenges when students were grouped by demographic profiles such as socioeconomic status and parental education. A strong correlation was found between effective coping mechanisms and higher academic performance. The study highlights the need for enhanced teacher training, improved resource allocation, and the integration of digital tools to support SPA implementation. Addressing the identified challenges can lead to better academic outcomes and a more equitable learning environment. This research underscores the importance of targeted interventions to optimize the SPA in mathematics education. Findings offer valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers aiming to enhance student learning experiences and outcomes.
