Precision x-ray/optical experiment timing at LCLS
I will give a brief overview of experimental x-ray/optical timing techniques at LCLS and I will go in depth into our new developments to meet the challenges of increasing repetition rate, achieve sub-10 femtosecond time resolution, and to simply pump-probe operations the hutches. At LCLS, we developed methods for characterizing and correcting the x-ray/optical laser timing jitter and drift by implementing the first x-ray/optical cross correlators and single electron bunch arrival time measurements to post sort data to increase experimental time resolutions to routinely achieve ~50 fs time resolution. This combined with novel timing and scanning techniques to increase experimental efficiency and resolving power have enabled hundreds of successful experiments and publications. We are currently focusing on novel structured cross correlator target geometries and measurement methods with a goal of achieving precision timing at high repetition are corrected for timing drift at almost all experimental wavelengths and operating conditions.
