Wavefront sensing at FELs: old tricks and new challenges with OAM beams, structured illumination and source metrology
Wavefront sensing is crucial for optics tuning, enabling precise photon transport and maintaining beam quality in FEL experiments. The growing use of structured light for probing matter has spurred efforts to generate and control complex beam shapes, such as OAM beams. At FERMI, we employ a Hartmann wavefront sensor to diagnose OAM beams produced via spiral zone plates or tailored emission schemes. This presentation highlights the successes and limitations of our approach, which leverages on Hartmann wavefront sensor, emphasizing the role of transport optics on the beam quality.
