Photoekphrastic novel: genre varieties (based on the material of modern English-language prose)

The article is devoted to the study of one of the theoretical aspects of modern genre studies – the identification of specific features of the poetics of the photoekphrastic novel, considered through the lens of intermediate discourse. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, taking into account the previously expressed interpretations, a more detailed and refined intragenre typology of the English-language photoerotic novel is presented, additionally, a definition of this concept is proposed. The aim of the study is to expand and deepen the comparative analysis of the novel-photoreconstruction and the novel-photoreflection as genre varieties of the photoekphrastic novel. It has been established that, thanks to the ontology of photography, which has undergone a transformation since the middle of the 19th century, modern English-language writers demonstrate the functioning of photoekphrasis at several levels of poetics of a literary text: plot, characterological, space-time, narrative, motive-thematic. As a result of the research, both the differentiating features of the two genre varieties and the unifying ones have been clarified, including: the theme of photography as an attempt to explore the world; contemplation of photography, just like its creation, becomes a co-existence for both the creator character and for the contemplative character; the intellectual co-creation of the reader-viewer.
