Nurse Practitioner Midwives in Advancing Maternal and Child Healthcare in India
Maternal and child healthcare is a critical component of any nation’s healthcare system, and India, with its diverse population and complex healthcare challenges, is no exception. Nurse Practitioner-Midwives (NPMs) have emerged as a vital solution to address these issues, offering a unique blend of comprehensive care that encompasses prenatal, maternal and child health. NPMs are advanced practice nurses with specialised training in midwifery and primary healthcare. In rural and underserved areas, where access to healthcare is limited, NPMs can serve as crucial healthcare providers. By expanding the role of NPMs and leveraging their expertise, India has the opportunity to significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes, reduce mortality rates and advance towards its healthcare goals. This article examines the policy implications and regulatory frameworks necessary to facilitate the integration of NPMs into the Indian healthcare system.
