Trop VIP: Politicizing Aya Nakamura in a Divided France
ABSTRACT: In the tense political climate leading to far-right victories in the European Parliament and snap 2024 French Assembly elections, Aya Nakamura became an unwitting political lightning rod. Controversy swirled around her participation in the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympic Games as some questioned her ability to represent France on the global stage. This article traces Nakamura's phenomenal rise to stardom and the obstacles she had to surmount as a Black immigrant woman from the Parisian banlieue. It examines her ability to combine multiple linguistic registers and sources to create a new language that appeals to fans while angering detractors.
