Comparative analysis of quasi-static and dynamic methods of calculating building structures for wind load

Abstract The paper is dedicated to comparative analysis of the quasi-static and dynamic methods of calculating building structures for wind load. The mathematical model of wind action is adopted in accordance with Eurocode standards as a one-dimensional stochastic process, the frequency structure of which is described by the Solari’s spectrum. The computer model of wind action is created based on the Weighted Amplitude Waves Superposition Method. Analysis of calculation results based on two methods is carried out using the example of transverse frames for frameworks of different number of storeys and lengths when varying inertial-rigidity characteristics and modal damping of the structures. It is demonstrated that the frame response parameters (horizontal displacement, axial force, bending moment, shear force) obtained by means of two methods can differ greatly. The greatest difference in the results is observed for the space of displacements and axial forces, where the response underestimation can reach 50 %. For wind load and response parameters in different spaces, asynchronous implementation of maximum values is shown. The reasons for the differences in calculation results obtained using quasi-static and dynamic methods are formulated, and ways to improve the standard calculations of buildings and structures for effects of wind load are proposed.
