Teachers’ Teaching Competence and Pupils’ 21st Century Skills and Performance

Competence of the teachers can be linked to the pupils' learning abilities in the 21st century as well as their performance. This study evaluated the extent of knowledge acquired by teachers regarding the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and how this knowledge correlated with their pupils’ learning styles and performance. The independent variable pertained to the information acquired by teachers regarding the terms of PPST Domains, specifically in content knowledge and pedagogy, learning environment, diversity of learners, and assessment and reporting. The dependent variable focused on the 21st century skills and performance of the pupils. The respondents of this study were the teachers (n=111) from the selected schools in the Division of Misamis Oriental. The gathered data underwent analysis and interpretation through various descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including Frequency and Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation, as well as the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Results showed that the teachers have very high competence. Pupils have very high learning styles and also high performance. Content knowledge and pedagogy showed moderate positive correlation with the pupils’ learning styles and performance. Thus, the success of the teachers is closely linked to the success of the learner. It is recommended that teachers use interactive techniques in their lessons to improve their instructional abilities.
