Removing GSM and 2-MIB from Actual Raw Water by Iron-Based Advanced Oxidation Technology

Abstract This study was aimed to apply iron-based advanced oxidation technology (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) to degrade typical odor substances (GSM and 2-MIB) in actual raw water. The reaction conditions such as initial pH, reaction time, molar ratio of Fe 2+ to H 2 O 2 , and Fe 2+ dosage were systematically studied and optimized. Meanwhile, the reaction conditions required to meet standards under different odor substance concentration conditions were explored. The results indicated that, for actual raw water with initial concentrations of 100 ng/L for GSM and 2-MIB, the removal efficiency of the two odor substances can both exceed 90% using iron-based advanced oxidation technology. The optimal reaction conditions were: initial pH 5, Fe2+ concentration of 6 mg/L, Fe 2+ to H 2 O 2 molar ratio of 1:3, reaction time of 5 min. For GSM and 2-MIB concentrations ranging from 30 to 1000 ng/L, achieving odor substance standards in the effluent (≤10 ng/L) could be realized by increasing Fe 2+ dosage from 2 to 25 mg/L.
