Design and Implementation of an Autonomous Sensing Intelligent Steering Wheel with Hands-Off Detection

Abstract The research background of this paper is based on the urgent need for vehicle intelligence and safety. With the rapid development of intelligent driving technology, as the core component of vehicle control, the intelligent steering wheel is the core component of vehicle control, its performance directly affects driving safety and user experience. However, the existing smart steering wheel technology has significant shortcomings in terms of sensor sensitivity and control algorithm accuracy, such as traditional systems due to single sensor configuration or limited algorithm processing capacity, as a result, the detection accuracy is insufficient and the response speed is slow, which is difficult to meet the real-time requirements in complex driving environments. In addition, the lack or insufficiency of fatigue driving monitoring and warning functions further increases driving safety risks. According to statistics, the proportion of traffic accidents caused by fatigued driving worldwide is as high as 20%-30% [1] . Therefore, by optimizing the sensor configuration and improving the control algorithm, an intelligent steering wheel system with high precision and high response speed is designed and implemented. The system adopts multi-sensor fusion technology, combined with a capacitance sensor, torque sensor, and biometric sensor, which can detect the driver’s hand state, grip force change, and physiological characteristics in real-time, and through the artificial intelligence algorithm to achieve fatigue driving monitoring, early warning and active intervention functions. The experimental results show that the system has excellent performance in different driving environments, which lays a solid foundation for improving driving safety and user experience. Future research will further optimize the sensor module, explore more intelligent functions, and promote its deep integration and collaboration with other intelligent driving systems.
