Challenges for Airport Infrastructure to the Current Demands of Sustainability
Abstract This study deals with the current challenges within the aviation infrastructure linked with environmental pollution from carbon emissions and qualifying aviation’s adverse environmental impact. Hydrogen, as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional aviation fuel due to its insignificant emissions, is thoroughly studied. However, the study points out that issues related to infrastructure, hydrogen storage, production, and prerequisite infrastructure modifications are the drawbacks to widespread hydrogen implementation as a fuel source. The study also found out the role of hydrogen in accordance with the European Green Deal and initiatives concerning the decarbonization of hydrogen fuel production. Moreover, the importance of airport capacity for the efficiency ensuring of the aviation sector is discussed. The study shows the requirement to advance multifactor models to assess the sustainability and efficiency of aviation technologies. Besides, it stresses the importance of including both life cycle assessments and socioeconomic factors in up-to-date technologies. Also, the study points out the meaning of innovation, participant collaboration in the aviation sector, and making informed decisions to build both sustainable and eco-friendly aviation infrastructures.
