A novel approach to beam size measurement at SSRF
Abstract The development of new-generation advanced synchrotron radiation facilities with ultra-low emittance and ultra-high beam stability demands more precise measurements of beam size. To address this, the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) has proposed the construction of a rapid measurement system for the beam size of each bunch and each turn. It is also a challenge for facilities with a high repetition frequency (500 MHz). This system, which leverages the capabilities of a spatial interferometer coupled with photomultiplier tubes, is designed to significantly improve the rate of data refresh and the precision of spatial resolution. Through a combination of experimental beam analysis and the refinement of algorithms, the system is poised to fulfill the stringent demands for real-time monitoring and analysis of beam size in cutting-edge synchrotron radiation sources. This initiative not only aims to meet current requirements but also sets the stage for the advancement of beam size feedback control technologies.
