Analysis of condensation reports for box-type transformers in wind farms and research on predictive dehumidification power station technology

Abstract This paper focuses on the intractable condensation issues of box-type substations in wind farms that are frequently exposed to harsh conditions such as high humidity and large temperature differences. By thoroughly analyzing the environmental data collected from four CECEP-affiliated wind farms, it comprehensively explores the condensation mechanism and the potential threats it poses to the safe operation of box-type transformer equipment. After a detailed comparison of rotary wheel, electric heating, compressor condensation, and semiconductor dehumidification technologies, a climate-based dehumidification plan is proposed: rotary wheel dehumidification combined with heating in alpine-humid areas, and an integration of condensation and semiconductor technologies in hot-humid-rainy areas. Fluent simulations effectively verify the rotary wheel system’s effectiveness, with an error of less than 3%. The study shows that customized dehumidification can significantly reduce the internal humidity of box-type transformers, prevent corrosion and short-circuits, and provide strong support for enhancing the operational reliability and life-cycle management of wind farm equipment.
