Design and optimization of a high magnetic field scanning magnet for SHINE
Abstract In the SHINE project, a superconducting accelerator with an energy of up to 8 GeV is utilized. The scanning width of the electron beam is increased by two scanning magnets installed in the DUMP section, causing the electrons to be redirected into the waste beam dump. The excitation of these magnets using AC current induces eddy currents within the yoke, resulting in temperature elevation that can damage insulation layers in the coil and bonding resins in the iron core, thereby affecting operational lifespan. A high magnetic field scanning magnet is designed within a limited length to deflect electrons by 1.4 degrees at a frequency of 10 Hz while maintaining temperature within an acceptable range. This paper presents an optimization method for designing such scanning magnets and provides a detailed analysis of eddy-current loss-induced temperature rise. The yoke’s eddy current and temperature distribution are calculated using OPERA-ELEKTRA/TR software encompassing transient electromagnetic analysis alongside steady-state thermal analysis.
