Freedom Of Speech Vs. Hate Speech On Social Media: Legal Boundaries And Challenges

Since social media has become so important in our public discussions, it is tough for societies to balance letting people speak freely and stopping hate speech. The paper looks at the conflicting views these two principles have and studies how laws, ethics and society respond to hate speech online. The study compares how cases like facebook in myanmar and twitter in the u.s. and india point to the challenges of content moderation in this era of online society. It studies what problems current content moderation technologies such as ai algorithms, face and explores the outcomes of laws that are too strict or too loose. It ends by discussing ways to improve the situation, stating that a good approach should have legal rules, enhance ai oversight, have humans in the loop, and join forces with other companies for regulation and press platforms to be more accountable. They are designed to defend free speech and protect people’s safety, making sure social media can be used for good exchanges without risking anyone’s well-being.
