Identifying Optimal Sites For Wind Energy In Togo: Comparative Analysis Of Wind Characteristics And Power Density For Sustainable Development.
Abstract This study focuses on assessing wind energy potential and its integration into the electrical grid, with a detailed analysis of wind characteristics in Lomé and the Mono and Oti River basins in Togo. The evolution of the electrical grid from 2000 to 2030 reveals a significant increase in installed capacity, accompanied by an energy demand that is gradually outpacing supply, thereby threatening system stability and exposing the country to potential electricity shortages. Concurrently, the study of wind speeds across various regions of Togo highlights notable disparities among the sites examined. Lomé stands out with strong and consistent winds, making it highly suitable for large-scale wind energy production, while other sites such as Atakpamé and Sotouboua exhibit moderate wind speeds, which are better suited for hybrid projects combining wind and solar power. The results of the wind power density analysis confirm Lomé’s high potential but also indicate that tailored solutions should be implemented in other regions to optimize the use of local resources.
