Trends in multiscale hard X-ray tomography: the new FaXToR beamline at ALBA

Abstract With the advent of the FaXToR beamline, dedicated to fast X-ray µ-Computed Tomography, the Spanish Synchrotron light source ALBA is progressing towards the implementation of a multi-scale, multi-technique approach to investigate the morpho-structural changes in biological samples from the cellular up to the tissue level or even whole small organisms. Similarly, the capabilities of the beamline are beneficial in a wide range of applications, from material science to cultural heritage to paleontology. Herein, the innovative endstation design enabling multiple research interests is described. Such flexible station allows morphological studies at the micron scale within sub-seconds in large volumes, using a large variety of experimental setups. This work focuses on the design of the beamline and provides an overview of the commissioning activities at FaXToR and possibilities in multiscale imaging. The beamline will enter into user operation by the beginning of 2025.
