Open-Source Datasets for Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence Research: A Comparison of ImageNet and MS COCO Datasets

The availability of open-source datasets has revolutionized artificial intelligence and machine learning research, and particularly in image processing and computer vision research. This paper draws attention to the pivotal datasets in this field (ImageNet and Microsoft Common Objects in Context (MS COCO) databases) through performance metrics and methods of evaluation. We discuss comparisons among them regarding their uniqueness, strengths and weaknesses, and their suitability for some of the tasks such as image classification and object detection. A review of recent literature reveals challenges and advancements related to these datasets, such as bias, annotation quality, and the need for diversity. We also discuss future directions in dataset development, stressing the importance of dynamic, diverse, and standardized datasets for improving model performance and generalization. This synthesis aims to offer insights for researchers and practitioners on effectively utilizing datasets in artificial intelligence.
