A Modular Dual-Mode Haptic Actuator for Low and High Frequency Feedback

This paper introduces HaptiSuit, a dual-mode haptic feedback system that integrates vibrotactile and pneumatic actuation to enhance the sensory experience within virtual reality (VR) environments. While VR technology has advanced considerably in visual and spatial dimensions, haptic feedback—crucial for realistic interactions—remains limited in versatility and scalability. HaptiSuit addresses these challenges by delivering both high-frequency vibrotactile sensations and low frequency pneumatic pressure, expanding the tactile realism achievable in VR. Each modular Vibro-Pneumatic Unit (VPU) within HaptiSuit can independently generate distinct feedback types, adaptable to full-body integration for various applications, including gaming, medical training, and rehabilitation. Preliminary testing demonstrates the system's responsiveness and tactile behaviour with a user study. This novel dual-mode system represents a promising step towards immersive, cost-effective haptic feedback for VR, opening avenues for more engaging and realistic virtual interactions.
