Comment: Wondering and Mind-Wandering Thoughts on IRT

I would like to congratulate Chen, Li, Liu and Ying for their excellent review paper. Based on their inspiring review, my comments focus on fixed vs. random effects for persons and items, the reinterpretation of latent variables as random effects instead of causal entities, the reevaluation of local dependence, and potential biases of DIF detection methods. In conclusion, like Chen et al., I see a broader potential for IRT than measurement.

Abstract

I would like to congratulate Chen, Li, Liu and Ying for their excellent review paper. Based on their inspiring review, my comments focus on fixed vs. random effects for persons and items, the reinterpretation of latent variables as random effects instead of causal entities, the reevaluation of local dependence, and potential biases of DIF detection methods. In conclusion, like Chen et al., I see a broader potential for IRT than measurement.
