Smart Shoe for Visually Disabled individuals with Object Detection and Pit Detection

This paper presents the design and development of a smart shoe system aimed at enhancing mobility and safety for visually impaired individuals. Traditional mobility aids, such as walking sticks, provide limited environmental feedback and often fall short in detecting obstacles and terrain hazards. To address these limitations, the proposed system integrates an Arduino Nano microcontroller with ultrasonic sensors to identify nearby obstacles and surface irregularities. Real-time alerts are delivered through a buzzer and vibrating motor, offering dual-mode feedback to accommodate users with combined sensory impairments. Additionally, the inclusion of a GPS-GSM module enables location tracking and emergency notifications, enhancing safety during independent travel. The smart shoe not only improves navigation accuracy and terrain awareness but also ensures continuous monitoring, thereby boosting the confidence and autonomy of the user. This work contributes a comprehensive, wearable assistive solution that merges navigation, hazard detection, and real-time tracking into a single, compact platform. This innovation combines navigation assistance, environmental awareness, and safety tracking, offering increased autonomy, reduced risk, and enhanced confidence for the users.
