Cover Feature: Cellulose Nanocrystals and Rice Husk Surface Functionalization Induced by Infrared Thermal Activation (ChemSusChem 11/2025)

The Cover Feature shows two paper clips representing the covalent bond between epoxidized linoleic acid (contained in sunflower oil) and cellulose from rice husk. The bubbles represent the hydrophobization of cellulose. In their Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/cssc.202500164), L. Gardossi, A. Operamolla and co-workers describe for the first time the use of infrared thermal activation (IRTA) to covalently bind cellulose from rice husk to epoxidized linoleic acid. The enhanced hydrophobicity of the resulting cellulosic material is demonstrated.
