AI Application in Military Systems: Pros and Cons

The paper examines the arguments for and against the integrated application of artificial intelligence (AI) in military technologies such as AWS, ISR, and DSS systems. The unmanned aerial and ground AI models provided very high rates of mission success (92%), high true positive threat identification (95%), and low false alarms. AI failure rates were less compared to human operators with regard to response time and threat detection. A global survey revealed mixed opinions: half were aware that AI improves national security, while 70% rejected the use of fully autonomous weapons, despite their benefits, because of moral objections, mainly loss of civilian lives. The study lists the key benefits of AI in terms of enhancing the speed and quality of decisions made, and the drawbacks like ethical concerns and public reluctance to accept smartened-up systems. Several research topics are highlighted for future investigations: ethical AI models, IHL standards for military applications, human and AI interfaces when operating in dangerous environments, and military robotic systems and responsibility. It is also crucial to focus on general public awareness of AI and military applications.
