Structure of demyelinating optic neuritis

Relevance Optic neuritis (ON) can serve as a marker of serious neurological diseases of demyelinating genesis, including multiple sclerosis (MS-ON) and diseases associated with antibodies to aquaporin-4 (AKV4-ON), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-ON). There are single (OION) and recurrent (RION) isolated ON, as well as seronegative forms with an atypical course (non-MS-ON) [1-4]. Objective To study the structure of demyelinating ON. Material and methods The study included 117 patients (161 eyes) with demyelinating ON, who were examined by an ophthalmologist and a neurologist. All patients were divided into 6 groups: RS-ON (33 patients, 44 eyes), AKP4-ON (12 patients, 21 eyes), MOG-ON (31 patients, 45 eyes), OION (21 patients, 21 eyes), RION (4 patients, 4 eyes), non-RS-ON (16 patients, 26 eyes). Results The sample of patients included 42.7% cases with typical ON and 57.3% with atypical ON. The results are presented in the table. Conclusion The most common types of RS-ON and MOG-ON were found in this sample of patients. The average age of disease onset ranged from 29.7 to 37.1 years. A predominance of women was found among patients with all forms of ON. A large number of cases of ON with an atypical course may be associated with patients with a more severe course of the disease seeking treatment at the Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Keywords: optic neuritis; demyelinating diseases
