Difficulties in the differential diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy
Relevance Serous detachment of the retinal neuroepithelium (SRE) in the fovea is a typical sign of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), but some diseases can be masked as CSCR [1–5]. Objective To identify biomarkers in optical coherence tomography (OCT) that allow one to suspect distant exudative maculopathy. Material and methods Clinical cases with an erroneous diagnosis of CSCR were analyzed. Results Common OCT signs that distinguish distant exudative maculopathy from CSC are an asymmetric form of SRE with an “open” edge, SRE height up to 350 μm, absence of RPE defects and (or) local SRE under SRE in the macular zone. Conclusion If the above biomarkers are detected on OCT, it is necessary to additionally perform OCT of the peripapillary region, as well as the region located peripherally to the “open” edge of the ONE. In addition, careful ophthalmoscopy and ultrasound are necessary [6].
