Biomechanical approach to myopia control: potential of bidirectional corneal pneumatic applanation with high-speed video recording

Relevance Evaluation of biomechanical parameters of the fibrous membrane of the eye in myopia is possible due to the technology of bidirectional pneumoaplanation of the cornea [1–3]. Objective Analysis of the application of this technique for biomechanical control of myopia. Material and methods The study included 129 patients (168 eyes) with myopia from (–) 0.75 to (–) 13.25 D. The value of the anteroposterior axis (APA) and the central corneal thickness (CCT) were in the range of 22.64–29.05 and 492–644 μm, respectively. APA was measured by laser biometry, CCT – by a rotational Scheimpflug camera, biomechanical parameters – by the technology of bidirectional pneumoaplanation (Corvis ST). Results A weak direct relationship was found between the AL and CTR, no correlation of the CTR with the stress-strain index (SSI), and a reliable inverse relationship of SSI with the AL. With an increase in the AL, the SSI index decreased. Conclusion The SSI index, determined by the bidirectional pneumoaplanation method, can be used as a clinical indicator of the sclera condition in the biomechanical control of myopia [4, 5]. Keywords: myopia; fibrous membrane; cornea; sclera; biomechanical properties; corneal pneumoaplanation
