A study of functional outcome of dorsally displaced distal end radius fracture treated with volar locking plate

Background: The complex anatomy of distal end radius makes the exposure and fixation of these fractures difficult. The nature of the injury once ascertained, it will be a very easy matter to explain the different phenomena attendant on it and to point out a method of treatment which will prove completely successful. Though various fixation options are available, the most commonly practicing technique are closed reduction and External fixation with early dynamization and Open reduction and Internal fixation with locking compression plate. Our study aim is to analyze the functional outcomes of dorsally displaced distal end radius fracture treated with volar locking plate. Methods: A prospective study was carried out at SMIMER Medical College and Hospital, Surat for 30 cases of distal end radius fracture excluding open fractures of patients between 18-65 years who attended our OPD or Emergency from June 2022 to November 2023.All patients with distal end radius with Dorsal displacement of distal fragment. Regular clinical and radiological follow-up was done to evaluate functionality of wrist, union status of fracture, non-union, secondary displacement, implant failure and any complications. Results: Out of 30 patients, 2 have MAYO B1, 5 have MAYO B2, 7 have MAYO B3, 9 have MAYO C1, 5 have MAYO C2 and 1 have MAYO C3 fracture. Conclusion: The volar plate is choice of implant for the fixation of distal end radius fractures since it offers good stability of fracture and enables early return of functionality.
