Promoting Gender Balance in Computing Education: Development, Trends, and Challenges

In this research work, we addressed the gender gap in computing education by evaluating interventions to promote IT education among females, a field often per-ceived as male-dominated. Through an extensive literature review, we explored factors contributing to this imbalance, reviewed gender preferences, and analyzed the social elements influencing females' decisions to pursue computing careers. A 3-day educational workshop for high school girls was proposed, alongside an experimental Path Model validated through surveys with female computing students at COMSATS University Islamabad. Results highlighted correlations between social factors, self-efficacy, and attitudes toward computing education. Closing gender gaps is vital for societal progress, therefore we established a network for young women in computing, collaborating with Women in Tech and Pakistani Women in Computing, to provide mentorship and peer support for aspiring young females joining this field in Pakistan.

Abstract

In this research work, we addressed the gender gap in computing education by evaluating interventions to promote IT education among females, a field often per-ceived as male-dominated. Through an extensive literature review, we explored factors contributing to this imbalance, reviewed gender preferences, and analyzed the social elements influencing females' decisions to pursue computing careers. A 3-day educational workshop for high school girls was proposed, alongside an experimental Path Model validated through surveys with female computing students at COMSATS University Islamabad. Closing gender gaps is vital for societal progress, therefore we established a network for young women in computing, collaborating with Women in Tech and Pakistani Women in Computing, to provide mentorship and peer support for aspiring young females joining this field in Pakistan.
