Integrating IoT Technologies for Monitoring and Control Systems: A Project-Based Approach to Developing a Fictitious IoT Company

The “Monitoring and Control Systems” course prepares students to design and optimize IoT-based monitoring and control systems for Industry 4.0. Using a flipped learning approach, students engage with theoretical content independently, reserving class time for hands-on, project-based activities. In a final interdisciplinary project, students form fictitious IoT technology companies to develop environmental monitoring solutions for smart buildings or industrial applications. This project integrates prior coursework, such as project management and microelectronics, allowing students to design scalable, energyefficient systems for data acquisition and wireless communication. Industry professionals act as mentors and evaluators, providing iterative feedback to refine both technical and professional skills. This real-world interaction enhances students' ability to meet industry standards while fostering entrepreneurial thinking by bridging technical expertise with strategic planning. Through this approach, students demonstrated significant improvement, with an average grade increase of 0.4 points per project phase, successfully developing diverse IoT applications.
