Automated Sorting System: An Industry 5.0 Online Lab Education Demonstrator Using Plcnext, IIoT and AI Technology

The integration of human-centric Industry 5.0 principles into education requires innovative teaching tools to bridge theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. This paper presents the development of an advanced educational demonstrator: an automated sorting system that incorporates cuttingedge technologies, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) frameworks, and AIbased optical inspection methods. Emphasizing modular design, this system combines 3D printing, precision cutting, and robust software integration to create a scalable, cost-effective learning environment. By merging classical and AI-driven computer vision techniques, students gain hands-on experience in sensor interfacing, real-time data communication, and human-machine interaction through an intuitive Human-Machine Interface (HMI). The demonstrator not only aligns with Industry 5.0's focus on sustainability and adaptability but also enhances critical thinking, collaboration, and practical skills, preparing students to meet the demands of modern industrial innovation.
