Constructing a Competency Model for Engineering Educators in the New Era: Integrating Foundational Theories and AI-Driven Pedagogical Innovations

Engineering education is undergoing a profound transformation due to rapid technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and the increasingly complex global challenges. To meet these demands, this paper presents a comprehensive competency model for engineering educators in the modern era. The model synthesizes insights from five established competency frameworks, while also addressing the growing role of AI. Key ethical considerations, including sustainability and societal responsibility, are integrated alongside technical and pedagogical competencies. The practical application of this model is discussed, highlighting its potential use in curriculum development and professional development programs for engineering educators.

Abstract

Engineering education is undergoing a profound transformation due to rapid technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and the increasingly complex global challenges. To meet these demands, this paper presents a comprehensive competency model for engineering educators in the modern era. The model synthesizes insights from five established competency frameworks, while also addressing the growing role of AI. Key ethical considerations, including sustainability and societal responsibility, are integrated alongside technical and pedagogical competencies. The practical application of this model is discussed, highlighting its potential use in curriculum development and professional development programs for engineering educators.
