Performance of a large-aperture, gas-cooled Faraday rotator and its role in depolarization mitigation for the L3 HAPLS pump laser

We present a large-aperture, gas-cooled Faraday rotator designed to mitigate stress-induced depolarization in high-energy, high-power laser systems. Under a simulated depolarization load of 3.3 kW, the rotator effectively converted spatially inhomogeneous, depolarized light—comprising linear, circular, and elliptical polarization states—into a nearly linear polarization with only 1% residual depolarization. Integrating this rotator into the L3 HAPLS pump laser allowed us to fully utilize the pump diodes’ output, resulting in higher amplifier gain. More significantly, the rotator replaces a complex depolarization removal scheme, enabling stable, high-energy operation at a 3.3 Hz repetition rate.
