Comparative clinical evaluation of healing of surgically depigmented gingiva by application of human Placental extract and hyaluronic acid

Objective The goal of the present research was to assess the outcomes of the adjunctive application of human placental extracts (HPE) and hyaluronic acid (HA) on the healing of gingival tissue following surgical depigmentation. Patients and methods Thirty patients complaining from gingival hyperpigmentation were divided to one positive control and two study (HA & HPE) groups. The three groups underwent surgical depigmentation by scraping and application of non-eugenol periodontal packs. In addition HA and HPE were applied after surgical depigmentation to the twice study sets respectively. Visual analog scale (VAS) was recorded at 24 & 72 hours, 10, 20 & 30 days. Landery wound healing index and degree of keratinization were evaluated at 10, 20 & 30 days postoperatively. Dummett Gupta oral pigmentation (DOP) index was evaluated on the baseline of the study in addition to one and three months postoperatively. Results Landry wound healing index of both HA and HPE groups was significantly better versus control group. keratinization of HPE set was significantly higher than that of hyaluronic acid set. DOP index of HPE group was statistically significant less than both of HA and positive control groups. VAS of hyaluronic acid was significantly lower than that of positive control group. Conclusion Application of both HPE and HA after surgical depigmentation of gingiva provide positive impact in accelerating healing. Superiority of HPE gel than HA gel in improvement of keratinization and decreasing the incidence of repigmentation. HA posseses extra benefit in pain control.
