Compression of a repetition-rate tunable electro-optic laser in the multiGHz regime

We explore a technology for a multi-GHz, high power fiber laser whose Repetition Rate (RR) can be electronically tuned between 6-18 GHz by using electro-optics modulators, with a picosecond duration and average powers up to 20 W. The spectrum follows a Bessel shape, with a typical width of 4-6 nm, and a dispersion varying with the RR, requiring a new approach for dispersion and temporal control. We designed a compressor that can adapt to the variation of the RR by using a static Chirped Volume Bragg Grating (CVBG) and a controllable optical spectrum processor (OSP). Finally, we developed an analytic time-frequency model of the source, in order to simulate expected shape and the pulse duration of our laser and compared them to our measurements. This laser technology can be used for laser machining or as a seed for very high average power amplification within the HORIZON project.
