Characterization of non-Gaussian beam profiles using laser ablation
We characterized fluence distributions [J/cm2] of focused non-Gaussian laser beams using the ablation imprints method. This method is derived from the Liu’s method that is commonly applied to measure beam widths of Gaussian laser beams and laser ablation threshold fluences of studied materials. However, Liu’s method can measure only Gaussian beams, which is often not the case in experiments. The ablation imprints method can characterize non-Gaussian beam with high dynamic range (≈ 10-3). Therefore, we accurately evaluate the fraction of the pulse energy contained in low-fluence beam tails which increases the accuracy of the peak fluence determination. We show two examples of the measurement. One at PALS laser (Vis) in comparison with far-field imaging, and the other at the European XFEL for grazing incidence LIDT measurement at 1 keV.
