Torsion of an appendiceal mucocele. A unique rarity
Appendiceal mucocele is a very rare condition, and its torsion represents an even more exceptional circumstance. Preoperative diagnosis of the condition is particularly challenging and complex due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and despite advances in medical imaging. This scenario requires special attention and early surgery, as it can lead to significant complications. Although the open approach is traditionally considered the standard surgical plan, the laparoscopic approach could be a relevant option, offering both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits. In this report, we present the unusual case of an adult male who underwent surgery for torsion of an appendiceal mucocele. This report describes the peculiarities of this unusual condition while discussing the viability of the laparoscopic approach as a surgical treatment option.
