Carcinosarcomas of the female genital tract : a rare tumor in postmenopausal women: A case report and literature review.

Uterine Carcinosarcomas (UCS) are rare malignant tumors, representing approximately 4–9% of uterine malignancies. Formerly designated as malignant mixed Müllerian tumors (MMMT) , these highly aggressive neoplasms are characterized by the coexistence of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components arising from a single progenitor cell. They primarily affect postmenopausal women and are frequently diagnosed following postmenopausal bleeding. However, no specific imaging features are pathognomonic for this disease. The prognosis remains poor, with reported 5-year survival rates ranging between 30% and 50% in published series. Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is the cornerstone of treatment. Nevertheless, the optimal adjuvant therapy (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or combined modalities) remains controversial due to the lack of standardized guidelines.
