"Orphans". Hyponym for rare diseases, but not so ultra-rare.
Orphan diseases are rare conditions for which patients experience a long and difficult diagnostic quest, coupled with a grueling journey in the hope of finding a specific treatment. This is why they frequently feel neglected and orphaned in the health sector. In the absence of specific approved treatments, the therapies offered are limited to alleviating symptoms. These minority pathologies, with their wide range, remain largely unknown by both patients and health professionals. This article aims to provide an overview of rare diseases and help healthcare professionals clarify and share information related to this topic
