Late Recurrence of Breast Cancer: A Case Report and Literature Review
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and its incidence is increasing. However, its mortality decreases with better screening programs, public education, and medications. Despite codified management that depends on multiple factors such as disease stage, molecular status, and histological response, the risk of relapse is high during the first years of follow-up, which decreases over time. Late relapses, occurring after five years of treatment, are not as common. Late relapses of breast cancer are mainly observed in ER positive tumors. Through the presentation of a case of recurrence of more than 10 years of breast cancer manifested by bone metastases, we will discuss the extent of this development; we are trying to understand these immunobiological mechanisms as well as optimal therapeutic and monitoring strategies.
