UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TRANSFORMATIVE COMPETENCIES BASED ON ETHNICITY: JAVANESE, MALAY, AND SUNDANESE

Sociocultural realm shapes individual identity and affects the development of transformative competencies. Ethnic background is part of the identity and has not been widely studied in relation to university students' transformative competencies. This study aims to analyze students' transformative competencies based on ethnicity. The research was conducted using a survey method with a cross-sectional design. Respondents were 167 undergraduate students at universities in Indonesia who were taken using random sampling techniques and evaluated with Rasch modeling. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires consisting of three aspects of transformative competencies: reconciling tensions and dilemmas, creating new value, and taking responsibility. The data were tested for normality using Kolmogorov-Smirnov as a prerequisite for analysis. Data analysis using the Kruskal Walli shows significant differences in transformative competencies among Javanese, Malay, and Sundanese ethnic students. Javanese ethnic students scored the highest in all aspects and indicators of transformative competencies, followed by Sundanese and Malay. Different tendencies were indicated regarding adaptability to change the way of learning and conveying ideas in unfamiliar social groups. The results of this research imply that students' transformative competencies can be perceived based on their ethnicity. Future research is encouraged to delve into community guidance and counseling that shape collective identity.
