THE COST OF AUTOMATION: AUTOMATION AS A TOOL FOR PRODUCTION SYSTEM RESILIENCE

Enhancing the resilience of production systems is becoming a key focus of industrial development amid growing technological, economic, and logistical turbulence. Automation is viewed as a tool for creating an adaptive, fault-tolerant, and manageable environment capable of responding quickly to internal and external disruptions. This article provides a structural analysis of the impact of automated systems on reducing production risks, stabilizing technological parameters, and ensuring operational continuity. Key components of digital control architecture are examined, including sensor networks, predictive analytics, MES and SCADA systems, and digital twins. Major automation-related barriers to resilience are identified, such as technological vulnerabilities, cybersecurity risks, skill shortages, and infrastructure compatibility limitations. Strategic approaches to building resilient production are presented, focusing on the integration of hybrid digital solutions, process redundancy, and digital deviation monitoring. It is concluded that the resilience of modern production is unattainable without intelligent automation covering all levels of the production system.
