No More Crickets: Simulated Podcasts and Discussants Enhance Student Engagement

Abstract
Faculty in a family nurse practitioner program observed low student engagement following traditional in-class student presentations. This paper explores an innovative approach to enhance student engagement by merging 2 teaching strategies: simulated podcast presentations and assigned discussants. With the addition of an assigned discussant role, more than 60% of students indicated increased engagement and application of the material. Faculty noted enhanced peer feedback, more peer-driven discussions, and a more dynamic learning environment. This strategy demonstrates how creative teaching strategies can promote active learning and improve academic outcomes in health care education.
